Why MSME business development services?

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are at the center of national economic development. MSMEs are acknowledged for driving creativity and innovations that translates to wealth generation and job creation thereby contributing to the development of the nation’s economy in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

An enterprise is an interdependent system of a web of several components that must fit in seamlessly for the enterprise to function successfully. Starting and managing an enterprise can be an intriguing and complex process requiring the connection of several complex dots that are usually outside the reach of an average enterprise operator and so they need present and continues support services to help navigate their way through the complex pathway of doing business successfully.

While they are existing MSMEs, people aspiring to become entrepreneurs continue to establish enterprises on a regular basis to facilitate the realization of their entrepreneurial dreams and they will always need all the support services they need to succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

What is business development services for MSMES?

Business Development Services (BDS) are all non-financial services that are offered to enterprise operators to enable them run their businesses successfully.

According to the Committee of Donor Agencies for Small Enterprise Development, 2001, within the context of MSMEs, Business Development Services (BDS) are generally defined as: “services that improve the performance of the enterprise, its access to markets, and its ability to compete.

By way of definition, Business Development Service (BDS) includes an array of business services (such as training, consultancy, marketing, information, technology development and transfer, business linkage promotion, etc.), both strategic (medium to long term issues that improve performance) and operational (day-to-day issues).

Importance of BDS for MSME Development

BDS are a very important means of supporting the development of micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs), which are known to create employment, generate income and contribute to economic development and growth. Employment and income generation are particularly important as far as impoverished rural areas, vulnerable communities and groups are concerned.

BDS play a very important form of support for the development of MSMEs by providing a range of business advice, information and support to the sector, as well as stimulating sustainable MSME development by improving the general business environment.

BDS are generally viewed as a mechanism for addressing market failures which are particularly evident in transition economies, such as lack of information (market opportunities, rules and regulations, access to credit, quality standards for export, etc.) which can act as a barrier to faster economic development and growth in a particular geographical area.

The Challenges
  • Beyond the challenges of lack of access to conventional finance, there are numerous other non-financial factors that inhibit the growth and expansion of the over 41.5 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and millions of others in the Informal Sector.
  • Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are confronted with diverse internal technical and operational challenges that prevents them from being productive and competitive.
  • Beyond distorted and periodic intervention programmes, there are no harmonized and coordinated commercial and demand driven Business Development Services and handholding for MSMEs
